Artistic and Cultural Practices
As a Metis artist, it is my greatest honour to create beadwork in the spirit of my family's ancestors. The beadwork I create reflects both my Metis matrilineal roots, and my husband's Cree and Stoney heritage.
Designed for exhibition, my beadwork often illustrates and explores a narrative I find compelling. With motifs encoded with cultural knowledge, and infused with the beauty of our peoples, I try to create work that resonates with both our history and the modern society.
Inspiration
Although my work is contemporary in colour and technique, I am most influenced by the master works created by traditional artists of the Northern Plains, who created beadwork from the mid to late 1800's.
For inspiration in Stoney style beadwork, I look to the heavens, finding celestial motifs, and stories of creation. For Metis florals, I find inspiration in the beauty of nature, and in family traditions and recollections.
